IMPORTANT THINGS FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL TO KNOW
WHEN REGISTERING VEHICLES IN SMITH COUNTY
Military personnel have the option of registering in the county they reside in or in their homes state of record.
Military exemption only applies to personal property taxes and not sales tax on vehicles.
Vehicles coming in to Kansas must have been registered in previous location for at least 6 months or it will be subject to sales tax, if not paid in previous location.
For the exemption to apply, the person in the military must be on the title as an owner.
Leased vehicles are NOT exempt from taxation.
Office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday
Items needed for registration in Kansas:
__1. Out of State Title (If title is at a lienholder, we need a faxed copy of the front and back of the title. Fax # 785-282-5175
__2. VIN Inspection on all out of state vehicles. Contact the Smith County Sheriff's Office or the Smith Center Police Department. This costs $10.00 in cash to inspector
__3. Current proof of insurance that included the vehicle ID# and the expiration date of the insurance
__4. Military ID
__5. Current full month LES, Orders and / or ORB or ERB
__6. Current Military Affidavit
In Kansas registration expires depending on the first letter of the person's last name
